While the other two play in perfect sync, the center player seems to drift into a world of their own. Eventually, they begin to follow the beat, as if trying to connect with the others. It’s not about giving up their uniqueness, but about accepting others while staying true to themselves. In the end, they return to their own rhythm again. Even if no one is playing the same, music still happens. It means “the sound of your own being.” In Japanese, the piece is also titled Jikyou, which translates to “the resonance of oneself.” This title reflects the heart of the piece: Your sound, shaped by your presence alone. The marimba, drums, and timpani move together in a steady shuffle rhythm. Above them, the vibraphone is free to sing— its own timing, its own pace. And yet, the chords are all connected. So even if the voices differ, they still belong. You don’t need to match anyone perfectly. This piece is a quiet message: “It’s okay to be yourself. Here’s how it works: Pick your favorite percussion instruments and place them in the center. Take turns playing it, adding your own rhythms one by one. You can have four players, or more. Use any instruments you like. You never know—maybe a wind player will crash the party mid-performance! If you’ve never tried improvising before, don’t worry. Start with simple combinations of eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Try adding rests too—it’ll make your rhythm even cooler. You don’t need to be perfect. What matters most is trying. Even if ensemble playing feels difficult sometimes, this piece lets you join in at your own pace. So—just give it a try.
